The Green Knight is an epic fantasy adventure inspired by the classic Arthurian legend of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s wild and headstrong nephew, who sets out on a perilous mission to meet the titular Green Knight, a giant emerald-skinned stranger, and man-tester.
In what becomes a deeper quest to define his character and establish his value in the eyes of his family and country by meeting the ultimate challenger, Gawain battles spirits, giants, thieves, and schemers.
A new and bold take on a famous tale from the knights of the round table from creative director David Lowery.
The plot is based on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’s poem. The poem “describes how Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur’s Round Table, accepts a challenge from a mysterious green Knight,‘ who dares any knight to hit him with his axe if he would take a return blow in a year and a day,” according to Wikipedia.
“Gawain takes his strike and beheads him, at which point the Green Knight rises up, picks up his head, and reminds Gawain of the scheduled hour. Gawain displays gallantry and fidelity in his efforts to maintain his agreement until his honor is put into doubt by a test involving Lady Bertilak, the lady of the Green Knight’s castle.”
