Army Of Thieves Is Now Streaming On Netflix – Read Review

Army Of Thieves Is Now Streaming

The idea of Army of the Dead was unique: a ragged collection of misfits get together to steal $200 million from a zombie-infested Las Vegas before a nuclear bomb is dropped on the city. With vibrant colors, gory headshots, and a scene-stealing zombie tiger, the outcome was one of Zack Snyder’s best films. The prequel, Army of Thieves, focuses on Ludwig Dieter, a jittery German safecracker with an astonishing high-pitched shriek of a scream.

Dieter – who is once again portrayed by Matthias Schweighöfer, who also directs while Snyder produces – proves to be a surprisingly strong protagonist, injecting humor and passion into the somewhat conventional storyline. Dieter – real name Sebastian – is unintentionally hired by professional thief Gwendoline (Nathalie Emmanuel) to break into three famed safes, each of which is situated in a high-security bank dispersed around Europe. The primary team quickly comes together – Guz Khan and Stuart Martin are joined by a driver (Guz Khan), a hacker (Ruby O. Fee), and a tough man (Stuart Martin) – and they begin plotting the more complex heists.

There are a few surprises along the way, but nothing groundbreaking. There are just too many narrative lines being spun at times, with the addition of some feuding French government employees adding significant baggage to the proceedings. Any scene without Dieter is a lost opportunity since the character is even more likable the second time around — Snyder made the right decision commissioning a prequel before Army of the Dead was released.

Parts of the film lack Snyder’s directorial flair. Schweighöfer is a standout behind the camera, especially when it comes to the actual safe-cracking, elevating an otherwise commonplace activity to spectacular heights. Expect nothing near the intensity of Army of the Dead’s opening titles, or any especially intense moments, even if there are some zombies on screen.

Overall the film Army of Thieves is better than Army Of The Dead. You can watch it on Netflix now.
