Black Canary: Jurnee Smollett

Jurnee Smollett will reprise her role in the upcoming action debut Black Canary, while Misha Green will pen the script.

This isn’t exactly surprising, and it’s something that fans have been screaming for since last year. Green and Smollett even mentioned they’d love to collaborate on a Black Canary series when doing the press rounds while Lovecraft Country was beginning up.

According to two sources, WB has chosen to make it a reality (which makes sense given HBO’s decision to pass on the second season of Green’s Lovecraft Country). While one source claimed it was a Black Canary “project” that may lead to a series, another claimed the idea had turned into a film that would (presumably) follow the events of Birds of Prey. Perhaps this is one of the HBO Max movies being created just for the service (like Batgirl and Blue Beetle)

Black Canary: Jurnee Smollett

Aside from Jurnee Smollett reprising the role, there have been few other details released. I’ve heard that WB is planning to make an official announcement about the project (and Misha Green’s involvement) at this year’s DC FanDome in October. So, perhaps, we’ll find out more information about it sooner rather than later.

I’m looking forward to seeing what Misha Green adds to the superhero narrative, given how much I liked Lovecraft Country. Not to mention Jurnee Smollett’s outstanding performance in the show. Their enthusiasm for the character has been palpable, and I can’t wait to see what else they can accomplish with Black Canary.
