The Disney+ Percy Jackson series has gone another step forward in development, with Jonathan E. Steinberg co-writing and executive producing the pilot alongside Rick Riordan, the original author.
Jonathan E. Steinberg is no stranger to fantasy television, having co-created the critically acclaimed Starz series Black Sails, which follows Captain Flint and his pirates 20 years before Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous novel Treasure Island. He’s also the creator of FX’s The Old Man, starring Jeff Bridges as a former CIA operative on the run from his deadly past. Steinberg is arguably best known for his co-creation and writing duties on the CBS post-apocalyptic thriller Jericho, which is a fan favorite.
As part of their overall arrangement with Fox 21, the production firm that is creating the movie for Disney+, Steinberg will also executive produce the next Percy Jackson film alongside his producing partner Dan Shotz.
Steinberg has been hailed by Fox 21 President Bert Salke as “a tremendously creative and a force of nature as a showrunner.” He’s one of the most competent multi-taskers we’ve ever encountered. We have great confidence that, alongside his producing partner Dan Shotz, he’ll be a key contributor to the Disney platforms and a strong presence as showrunner on our shows.”
It is presently uncertain when the series will premiere on Disney+, but provided that lead casting has begun and that pre-production proceeds well, Percy Jackson might premiere on the streaming service as early as 2023. Although this is only a forecast, the film and television business is still trying to regain its feet in the middle of the epidemic.
