Black Widow: Huge Drop In Box Office On Its 2nd Weekend

Black Widow: Huge Drop In Box Office

The weekend box office winner was Space Jam: A New Legacy, which dethroned the previous week’s champion, Marvel’s Black Widow.

The Warner Bros. sequel to the original Space Jam earned $31.65 million vs $26.25 million for Black Widow, rapidly dethroning the Marvel feature (and much earlier than expected).

The availability of the toon/live-action mash-up for free on HBO Max and poor reviews do not appear to have hindered Lebron James‘ Space Jam: A New Legacy. Space Jam: A New Legacy now has a deflated 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, despite an 81 percent Audience Score and an A- Cinemascore (the same grade as Black Widow last week), demonstrating once again that critics’ opinions of films aimed at children are unimportant to families.

Black Widow is closing in on F9 (which came in fourth place with $7.6 million) and A Quiet Place Part II (which came in seventh place with $2.3 million) for the year-to-date box office crown, with A Quiet Place Part II clinging at $155 million. Widow, on the other hand, will take a lot longer than planned to get there, since her stock has fallen -67 percent just last week.

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, the other new picture this week, came in third place with $8.8 million, as horror films strive to reclaim their box office dominance. Escape Room 2 is expected to generate a profit for Sony Pictures, but a considerably smaller one than the original’s $57 million profit.

Check back next week to see who the new champion will be, with the majority of the betting money expecting G.I. Joe Origins: Snake Eyes to take the lead.
