Exclusive: Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick has grossed over $1 billion worldwide. The film had a domestic total of $521.723 million and overseas the film collected $487 million. Maverick became the highest-grossing film of 2022, the 48th highest-grossing film of all time, the second film to cross $1.005 billion in the pandemic era, and the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career.
Top Gun: Maverick is now holding the 15th position on the all-time domestic chart between Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ($515 million in 2019) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($532 million in 2016). Besides Lion King ($543 million) Maverick is the second-biggest-grossing movie. Globally, Top Gun: Maverick is now in the 50th position below The Dark Knight ($1.006 billion). The Dark Knight, Rogue One, and Black Panther as films that passed $1 billion with over 50% of the money coming from North America and will soon pass Joker ($1.073 billion) to become the second biggest “never played in China” grosser behind Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.9 billion).
Maverick is a sequel to Top Gun (1986), the film stars Tom Cruise as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell reprising his role from the original, alongside Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer. Set 36 years after its predecessor, it follows Maverick’s reluctant return to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program, where he must confront his past as he trains a group of younger aviators, among them the son of Maverick’s deceased best friend.
With 47 films in Tom Cruise’s career, Top Gun: Maverick is the first film to cross $1 billion at the global box office.
