Candyman: The horror Hive Is Unleashed First Trailer Out

The shudders started as soon as I saw the new trailer for Nia DaCosta‘s Candyman. Colman Domingo tells the terrifying narrative of the titular creature in the video’s opening scene. In the current day, it shows Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s ill-fated quest for the riddle. The whole thing is enough to make me stay away from my bathroom mirror for the next several days.

The teaser for Candyman reminds us of one irrefutable truth: nothing is scarier than a mirror. This isn’t a case of my low self-esteem coming to the fore—at least, I don’t believe it is. It’s just an admission that whenever I look in the mirror, a part of me anticipates the unexpected. Will someone appear from behind me, but also right in front of my eyes, from around the doorframe? Will my own reflection expose the hoax and start acting in ways that are unrelated to my physical movements? Will some otherworldly evil powers leak through the cracks in the glass?

I wish I could get rid of these sensations; cleaning my teeth at night is typically a nightmare. I’m guessing it all started with a childhood watching of Candyman. (Or the Bloody Mary game, which has a similar concept.) Do the two even know each other, now that I think about it? When they’re overbooked, do they ever cover for one another?) After viewing Nia DaCosta’s terrifying-looking adaptation, these worries are guaranteed to be amplified.

Candyman by DaCosta has been a long time coming, having been delayed by the COVID-19 epidemic. We’re looking forward to finally seeing her version of the 1992 horror classic, which also stars Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Vanessa Estelle Williams. On August 27, Candyman will be released in cinemas.
