Is Aftersun Worth Watching?
Charlotte Wells directed the film. The film has a 96% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The plot follows, “At a fading vacation resort, 11-year-old Sophie treasures rare times together with her loving and idealistic father, Calum. Twenty years later, Sophie’s tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship.”
In an interview with MUBI’s Notebook Interview, Wells was asked about the coming-of-age narrative for Sophie with this more nostalgic, emotional portrait of her father. He said, “Of the many things the film is about, one was this idea of shared joy and private melancholy, or individual experiences not being mutually exclusive with a different type of shared experience. And so the arc with the teens and Michael and some sense of a burgeoning awareness of body and sexuality endured, and those were details I was interested in capturing just as much as the Fanta Lemon.”
The film stars Paul Mescal as Calum Paterson, Frankie Corio as Sophie Paterson, Celia Rowlson-Hall as adult Sophie, Sally Messham as Belinda, Brooklyn Toulson as Michael, Spike Fearn as Olly, Harry Perdios as Toby, Ruby Thompson as Laura, Ethan James Smith as Scott, and Kayleigh Coleman as Jane.
