Colin Farrell has officially signed on to feature in and executive produces a “The Batman” spinoff in which he will reprise his role as The Penguin.

According to Variety, Farrell will first portray the villainous character in “The Batman” starring Robert Pattinson, which is due to be released on March 4, 2022. The series would then reportedly delve into The Penguin’s rise to power in the Gotham criminal underworld.

The Penguin, a.k.a. Oswald Cobblepot, is a well-known member of the Batman Rogues Gallery, distinguished by his top hat, monocle, and a vast range of lethal umbrellas. Burgess Meredith, Danny DeVito, and Robin Lord Taylor have all previously played the role in live-action films.

Farrell is most recognized for his various film portrayals, including “The Lobster,” “In Bruges,” and “Seven Psychopaths,” for which he received critical acclaim. He most recently appeared in the BBC and AMC Plus drama “The North Water,” and he previously appeared in HBO’s “True Detective” Season 2. He just finished filming “The Banshees of Inisherin,” in which he reunited with Martin McDonough, the writer-director of “In Bruges,” and co-star Brendan Gleeson.

Lauren LeFranc has been tapped to pen the series’ screenplay. Matt Reeves, the filmmaker of “The Batman,” and Dylan Clark, the film’s producer, will executive produce the Penguin series under their 6th & Idaho and Dylan Clark Productions labels, respectively. Warner Bros. Television would be in charge of the production.
