Olivia Wilde, Spike Jonze, Phoebe Tonkin, and Tobey Maguire have joined the cast of Babylon, Damien Chazelle’s homage to Hollywood’s golden period that will be released by Paramount Pictures. Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, and Diego Calva, as well as Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, and Katherine Waterston, head the cast of the film that will be released next week.


The cast also includes Max Minghella, Lukas Haas, Flea, Rory Scovel, Samara Weaving, Eric Roberts, P.J. Byrne, and Damon Gupton. Babylon, directed by Chazelle and set in the late 1920s amid the film industry’s transition from silent to talkies, follows the rise and fall of a number of individuals. The project has been dubbed “The Great Gatsby on steroids” in the community.


The film will be shot in Los Angeles, and Paramount is contemplating a platformed release, with a restricted release on December 25, 2022, followed by a wide release on January 6, 2023. Produced by Olivia Hamilton, Matt Plouffe, and Marc Platt. Maguire is also an executive producer on the film, so he’s performing double duty. Helen Estabrook and Adam Siegel are also executive producers. Don’t Worry Darling, a thriller directed by Wilde and starring her, was recently completed. Florence Pugh and Chris Pine also feature in the New Line film. CAA and Ziffren Brittenham represent her.

Jonze is a music video director who has also directed films such as Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Her. The director, who most recently directed the documentary Beastie Boys Story, has made a few appearances in front of the camera, including an episode of HBO Girls, Johnny Knoxville’s Bad Grandpa, and a co-starring part in the 1999 film Three Kings. CAA and attorney Warren Dern represent him.

Tonkin is an Australian actress best known for her role in The Originals, a spinoff of The Vampire Diaries on The CW. Echo Lake Entertainment and Marquee Management in Australia represent her.


Maguire hasn’t appeared on screen in a long time. He portrayed the narrator in DreamWorks Animation’s 2017 blockbuster The Boss Baby and most recently starred in Ed Zwicks’ 2014 thriller Pawn Sacrifice as chess master Bobby Fischer. WME and Management 360 represent him.
