Harry Potter Reunion 2022

The original Harry Potter cast Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint appeared for 20th Anniversary Special on HBO Max.

The Harry Potter films launched The Wizarding World franchise, which includes books, films, video games, theme parks, plays, and more, extending the Harry Potter sensation throughout the world and ensuring the Harry Potter legacy lives on. A prequel series dubbed Fantastic Beasts is slated to release the third film in the series, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, in 2022, while a sequel titled Harry Potter and The Cursed Child was adapted into an award-winning play. Last month, it was reported that the original ensemble would reunite for an HBO Max special in 2022 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first film. Rowling, who has been criticized for recent social media comments, is noticeably absent from the Harry Potter special, leaving the reunion without its creator unless her attendance is kept under wraps. So far, the author has written the scripts for the Fantastic Beasts trilogy, with Harry Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves coming in to help Rowling with the most recent attempt. HBO Max was also recently confirmed to be working on a Harry Potter series for the streaming service, though no information on what it would include or who would be involved has been revealed.

The Harry Potter series, based on J.K. Rowling’s books, became the third-highest earning franchise of all time, making more than $7.7 billion worldwide.

Harry Potter has become as popular as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or Marvel at this point, and HBO Max is smart to capitalize on that popularity. Owning the IP and having the ability to expand on it is another thing entirely, which should be a top priority for WB and HBO Max. The announcement of a new series coming to the streamer is a smart move, but hopefully, it’s something that fans will want (more Harry Potter), rather than something they don’t (less Fantastic Beasts). Spinoffs and prequels can be great for any studio IP, but oftentimes those projects can veer too far away from what makes them special, creating something unrecognizable to the original property.
