Fox’s “The Exorcist” television series, which cleverly revealed itself to be a direct sequel to William Friedkin’s horror classic, it appears that director David Gordon Green’s (Halloween, Halloween Kills) upcoming Blumhouse “reboot” will also be a sequel to the 1973 film, with Gordon Green giving the property the Halloween 2018 treatment.

“It’s another great legacy to be a part of,” Gordon Green says, “and hopefully we’ll get that going soon.” Rather than spontaneous screenwriting, that one requires a lot of studies. That’s a topic on which you speak to a lot of people. You read a lot of books and interview a lot of people. That original movie had such a tremendous realism about it. It’s a lot more than I expected when I first started reading it. And I suppose it was naive of me to believe that. But being a part of a lot of the conversations that you find yourself in was exhilarating.”

Since the 2005 release of Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist, an alternative version of the previous year’s Exorcist: The Beginning, the Exorcist franchise hasn’t been seen on the big screen. Those films followed The Exorcist II: The Heretic from 1977 and The Exorcist III from 1990.

More recently, “The Exorcist” was adapted into a Fox television series that was unexpectedly good and brilliantly set in the same universe as the original masterpiece.
