Disneyland Celebrates 66th Birthday

Disneyland Celebrates 66th Birthday today! If we’re getting precise, you’re 67 and a day old if we count the first day of construction as your birthday.

Because Disneyland was closed for its 65th birthday, no celebrations were held. And Disneyland birthdays are generally a huge deal – especially if it’s a significant birthday like 65!

THE CITY OF ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA – On July 17, 1955, Disneyland, the one theme park developed and built under Walt Disney’s direct supervision, opened its doors. The construction took exactly one year and cost under $17 million to complete. In the video above, you can see how it looked throughout the day.

With a total of 28,000 guests, the inaugural ceremony was only available to around 11,000 people and the press. This was owing to a fever of fraudulent tickets. The event, which was broadcast on ABC, included performers Artwork Linkletter, Bob Cummings, and Ronald Reagan, all of whom were close friends of Walt Disney. Despite the fact that it was originally planned as a preview event before opening to the general public the next day, Disneyland chose July 17 as its official opening and birthday day.

Though Disneyland has changed significantly over the last six years, the majority of the attractions that were operational on opening day are still operational today, although with modest restorations or changes.
