Eternals: Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani Didn’t Know The Climax Till The Premiere

Eternals: Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani

The stars of Eternals Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani agree that they had no idea what the movie’s final ending was until they watched it. Chloé Zhao, an Academy Award winner, directed Eternals, the third film in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film stars Nanjiani and Jolie, as well as Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Dong-seok Ma, Lia McHugh, Lauren Ridloff, and Barry Keoghan, as a group of immortal beings who have guided humanity’s development and defended them against the Deviants since their arrival on Earth 7,000 years ago.

Kingo, a self-obsessed Bollywood celebrity who can shoot energy beams from his hands, is played by Kumail Nanjiani, while Thena, a talented warrior suffering from mahd w’yry, a fugue-like disease caused by the weight of so many years of memories on a single brain, is played by Angelina Jolie. Because there are too many people to manage, the film decides to break them apart for the finale and epilogue. In particular, Thena battles the deformed Deviant Kro (Bill Skarsgrd) in a remote cave before fleeing the planet in pursuit of more Eternals to free from the Celestials’ falsehoods, where she meets Harry Styles’ Eros. Kingo isn’t in the climactic conflict since he refused to be a part of stopping the emergence, yet he is among the Earthbound Eternals rescued by Arishem at the end of the film.

Kumail Nanjiani and Angelina Jolie were asked on D23’s Inside Disney podcast if they had the opportunity to read the whole screenplay and know the film’s finale ahead of time. They both claimed that they understood their characters’ fates and the overall plot, but there were portions of the film that they were absolutely unaware of until they saw it, particularly the end-credits scene. That sequence was shot without Nanjiani’s knowledge, and Jolie confesses she didn’t know until immediately before it was shot, and she was trying to “find out who was there and what happened to everyone else.”

Jolie: There was a final script but I don’t know if that’s just secrets or also all the individual character development that everybody was doing as it was going along. So you would be surprised by your fellow actors, or something they added or some choice was made that made something more than you’d expect.

I went into it still not sure what the end was going to be. I knew what happened to me at the end but then I was surprised what happened to some of the other people in the end. I had no idea. I had no idea what happened to the other group in the end until I saw the movie.

Nanjiani: I had no idea how it was going to end. We had a version of the full script it kept evolving because as Angie said characters kept developing.

I did not know that you guys shot that [end-credits scene with Harry Styles] on the ship at the end.

Jolie: And I didn’t didn’t know until about 12 before I shot the ship at the end and I was trying to figure out who was there and what happened to everybody else.

Nanjiani: Well this is what happens. You guys are flying around space on a spaceship with One Direction and the rest of us have been taken captive by the strongest being in the universe.

Jolie: Right. I think I got the better side of that one.

While it’s amusing that both Eternals stars were oblivious to what was going on in the end-credits sequence, it’s understandable. They didn’t film those moments together because of the broken finale, which sees the individuals go their own ways. Similarly, the end-credits sequences were most likely created by MCU producers independently of the screenplay and long after it was completed, in order to tie in with the projects they believed would be most feasible to connect to the film.
