Eternals Marks $100M+

Despite mixed reviews and an ongoing pandemic, Marvel’s Eternals has become the tenth film in 2021 to gross more than $100 million in the United States. When Eternals appeared in cinemas at the beginning of November, it had already been delayed twice by the coronavirus outbreak. The MCU epic, directed by Chloé Zhao, introduces ten new superheroes to the ever-expanding world and follows their journey over thousands of years. Eternals also has Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kit Harington, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie among its star-studded roster.

Marvel movies are usually box office blockbusters, but 2021 has proven to be an exception for the MCU. MCU films like Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings have helped steer things in the right direction as the domestic box office returns to normal after last year’s dismal lows caused by the epidemic. Shang-Chi is also presently the highest-grossing film of the year. Eternals was supposed to debut even higher than Shang-Chi, but its $71 million three-day total fell short of forecasts. Nonetheless, that’s one of the biggest debuts of the epidemic period, and Eternals has been doing well internationally.

For the second weekend in a row, Eternals has surpassed a significant milestone that just nine other films have attained this year. Eternals has topped the American box office with a total of $27.5 million, according to Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes’ Erik Davis. It now has a domestic total of over $118 million, making it the tenth film to accomplish so this year. As Davis pointed out, 34 films did so in 2018, and 29 did so in 2019. Only two companies made it to the $100 million mark last year (Bad Boys for Life and Sonic the Hedgehog).

As indicated by previous years’ figures, only ten films crossing the $100 million mark by the middle of November are far from average. However, as compared to 2020, it’s a significant improvement. Audiences are still gaining confidence in going back to the cinema, and certain films are also available to watch. Despite this, ten films spanning a wide range of genres (superhero, action, adventure, etc.) have managed to amass significant box office totals. Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and The Matrix Resurrections are among the films that might reach this milestone in 2021.

Eternals is currently the eighth highest-grossing film of the year, with its total expected to rise in the following weeks. It may not be able to defeat Shang-Chi or even Black Widow, but it should provide a satisfying conclusion for Marvel in the post-pandemic age. The MCU’s Eternals was a one-of-a-kind release in that it also has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in the whole franchise. Nonetheless, crowds continue to be interested in seeing it, thus Eternals may have some staying power.
