Exclusive: Henry Cavill Has Retired From Playing Superman

Exclusive: There is bad news for all Superman fans. Henry Cavill is no longer returning as Superman, and the Man of Steel sequel has also been dropped.

Henry Cavill’s Superman Will Not Appear In Future DC Films

On Instagram, Cavill officially announced that he will no longer be returning as Superman after a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran. Back in October, Cavill made an announcement that he was returning as Superman prior to Black Adam’s cameo. Cavill said in a statement, “My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will.”

Check out Cavill’s statement below.

“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.

For those who have been by my side through the years… we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember… Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”

According to Gunn, a new Superman film is in the works. The project will focus on the hero in his younger days as a cub reporter in the Metropolis city and star an actor other than Henry Cavill. The script is written by Gunn himself. On Twitter, Gunn posted “Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.” also he confirmed it will be not an origin story of Superman.

Now officially, Wonder Woman 3 and Man of Steel 2 have been dropped. On Tuesday, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins posted a statement on Twitter saying that the “was open to considering anything asked of me” in regards to Wonder Woman 3, which was scrapped. Shortly after, Gunn responded with support, “I can attest that all of Peter and my interactions with you were only pleasant and professional.”
