Vanessa Kirby has been cast alongside Laura Dern and Hugh Jackman in Florian Zeller’s ‘The Son’. The film focuses on Peter (Hugh Jackman) as his life with his new partner (Kirby) and their baby is thrown into disarray when his ex-wife (Dern) turns up with their troubled teenage son.
Kirby, who was nominated for an Academy Award for “Pieces of a Woman,” will feature with Laura Dern and Hugh Jackman in the picture. “The Son,” like “The Father,” was adapted from Zeller’s highly acclaimed stage drama by Zeller and Christopher Hampton (“Dangerous Liaisons”). Zeller and Hampton were just awarded the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Iain Canning and Emile Sherman (“The King’s Speech”), as well as Joanna Laurie of See-Saw Films and Christophe Spadone (“The Father”), are producing the film with Zeller. Film4 is a co-financing partner. Filming is set to begin in the following weeks.
“Vanessa Kirby is a fantastic actor in my opinion: passionate, creative, and forceful. I’m really excited to take her on this cinematic journey,” Zeller added. The movie “holds a mirror up to our families and our emotions,” Laurie said, adding that “we’re extremely pleased to add Vanessa to the already immensely brilliant ensemble of Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern in bringing this narrative to life.”
Kirby earned the Volpi Cup for best actress at the 2020 Venice Film Festival, in addition to her Oscar nomination for “Pieces of a Woman.” She won a BAFTA Award for her depiction of Princess Margaret in “The Crown,” for which she received international recognition. “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” and the Fast franchise spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw” are among her cinematic credits. She was also nominated for an Ian Charleston Award for her performances in “Three Sisters” and “Uncle Vanya.” Among Kirby’s future projects is writer-director Thomas Bidegain’s “Suddenly,” in which she will co-star with Jake Gyllenhaal.
Cross City Films and Embankment are handling international sales for “The Son,” with Cross City Films and CAA Media Finance co-representing U.S. rights. Kirby is handled by Linden Entertainment and is represented by CAA and Ziffren Brittenham’s Hamilton Hodell and Gregory Slewett. CAA is Florian Zeller’s manager.
Zeller is coming off the success of “The Father,” which earned Sir Anthony Hopkins two BAFTAs and two Oscars for adapted screenplay and leading actor. In addition to best picture, editing, production design, and supporting actress, “The Father” received Oscar nominations for best picture, editing, and production design.
