George R.R. Martin Teases The Ending Of Game Of Thrones

George R.R. Martin is still writing on the next book in his epic series of fantasy books that inspired HBO’s Game of Thrones. But he took a break from his work to complain about how the television version seemed to deviate from his original material.

Fans have publicly criticized the conclusion of the TV series, and Martin’s sluggish production on his A Song of Ice and Fire novels (The Winds of Winter is the next in the planned series) has enraged many who want a meaningful finish. Martin expressed astonishment that the television series had outpaced his productivity.

“When they started the [TV] series, I already had four novels in print, and the fifth one came out just before the series started in 2011. “I had a five-book head start, and these are massive novels, as you know,” Martin said to PBS in Chicago. “I never imagined they’d catch up with me, but they did. They caught up to me and overtook me.” Martin only got to publish one book in the series while the show was on the air.

Martin also stated that when the television series surpassed his source material, he thought it was “moving in slightly new directions.” So, I’m still working on the book, but you’ll see my ending when it’s published,” he explained. House of the Dragon, HBO’s prequel series, is slated to premiere in 2022 with a 10-episode first season. Martin is back in the series, which might be an issue given that he confessed the first season diverted his concentration away from writing.
