As “Godzilla vs. Kong” arrives in theatres in the United States on Wednesday, it will overwhelm “Tenet,” “Wonder Woman 1984,” and any other pandemic-era film.
The epic monster mashup from Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment is now playing in over 3,000 theatres across North America. That outperforms Christopher Nolan’s time-bending sci-fi thriller “Tenet,” which previously held the record.

“Godzilla vs. Kong,” directed by Adam Wingard, is releasing in the United States after a big success overseas. The film was released in 28 countries and grossed a total of $121 million in ticket sales. In the midst of the pandemic, those figures reflect the highest opening weekend revenue for a Hollywood film at the international box office. (With $53 million, “Tenet” had the best overseas launch of the pandemic.)
