Hailee Steinfeld, who plays Kate Bishop in Disney+’s Hawkeye, says she fell in love with archery while prepping for her part. Jeremy Renner’s titular bow and arrow-wielding superhero Clint Barton has yet to establish his foothold in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite his introduction as the sixth original Avenger a decade ago. Hawkeye’s solo endeavor has been a long time coming, and fans have worried if he will ever have an opportunity to shine. But it wasn’t until the launch of Disney+ that the underutilized character got his due, as Marvel saw the streaming channel as the ideal vehicle for telling the narrative of the tactile sharpshooter. Following that, a Hawkeye TV series was revealed to be in production for Phase 4 in 2019. However, manufacturing will not begin until December 2020, as work has been slowed by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. The programme is currently on schedule; it has already wrapped production and is set to premiere later this year.
Renner’s character will not be fully on his own in the next program, despite the fact that he will be given a lot of screen time. Several characters from the comics, including Maya Lopez/Echo, Jack Duquesne/Swordsman, and Yelena Belova/Black Widow, will feature in the program. The other role, meanwhile, will be played by Hailee Steinfeld, a Dickinson actress who will play Kate Bishop, Barton’s apprentice and maybe his successor. Even before Kate’s casting was revealed, Steinfeld was a popular candidate. There have been a few glimpses of Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop outfit so far, most of which are based on leaked set images.
Steinfeld has already expressed her love for archery and said that she has become proficient at the sport, despite the fact that she hasn’t had much of an opportunity to show off her talents. Steinfeld discussed how she prepared for her part as Kate in Hawkeye in a recent interview with SFX Magazine (via XRealm). She briefly mentioned reading the comics to learn more about her character’s backstory, but she mostly talked about learning archery for the show, a discipline she has already mastered and fallen in love with. Her comments below
As far as a bow and arrow goes, I’m pretty damn good! And I’ll say it’s something that I genuinely, really enjoy. Not something I’ve ever picked up, a bow, before this project. So something I definitely recommend – it’s a sport that anybody can play and start at any point in their life. And it’s truly therapeutic and just amazing. Not something I’d ever see myself doing. But here I am! And I absolutely love it.
Aside from archery, Steinfeld will be seen in Hawkeye in a number of other action-packed scenes, including an explosive automobile chase. Her character will also join Barton on his escapades against the evil Tracksuit Draculas, assisting him in the rescue of Lucky, alias Pizza Dog, from their hands. It’s unclear how Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop story will play out on the show at the time. But, in terms of the character’s future, Steinfeld has signed a multi-project agreement with Marvel Studios, and she will reprise her role in numerous MCU properties beyond Hawkeye.
The excitement for Hawkeye has only grown after Steinfeld revealed her affinity for archery. Fans are ecstatic to see Steinfeld in the series as Kate Bishop, thanks to the buzz generated by her bodysuit and characteristic bow and arrow, which are true to the character’s iconic comic-book aesthetic. Aside from that, many people are expecting to see the actress in a Young Avengers film, which may be on the way considering that the MCU is set to run until 2027. Fans are eager to see Kate Bishop dazzling through the high-octane clashes in Hawkeye, thus Steinfeld’s views on archery are sure to raise Kate Bishop’s appeal even more.
