In an interview with Radio Times, His Dark Materials executive producer Jane Tranter told that she would like to have liked more episodes. Tranter said: “Honestly, I would have told it across nine seasons if I could have done. There are so many stories that we weren’t able to do.”

She singled out a storyline in the fantasy drama’s second season featuring Ruta Skadi (Jade Anouka) as a plot point that might have been expanded. “When Ruta Skadi meets the angels in season 2, it’s kind of like ‘Oh look, there’s some angels, I’m gonna go off now.’

Tranter added that the “real estate of television” often allows series adaptations to “slow everything down” and expand on the source material. “I would have slowed this [His Dark Materials] down even more,” she said. “But unfortunately that’s probably the wrong thing for an audience – some would have liked it, but it’s expensive and it’s a season-a-book and that’s that and now it’s finishing.”

His Dark Materials Season 3 will have a returning cast that includes Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter, Anne-Marie Duff as Maggie ‘Ma’ Costa, Ariyon Bakare as Lord Carlo Boreal, Gary Lewis as Thorold, Lewin Lloyd as Roger Parslow, Nina Sosanya as Elaine Parry, Jade Anouka as Ruta Skadi, Sean Gilder as Father Graves, Simone Kirby as Dr. Mary Malone, and James McAvoy as Lord Asriel Belacqua.

Tranter revealed that James McAvoy’s Asriel will have an expanded role in His Dark Materials Season 3. “we had the joy of having James McAvoy back with us” after his character was mostly absent during season 2, and said that as screenwriter Jack Thorne wanted to write for the actor, they were faced with a dilemma because “Asriel doesn’t really come in [to the book] until significantly later”. Tranter explained that McAvoy’s role is therefore expanded in the series, with a new character added for him to interact with in these new scenes.

Keen, who stars as Lyra Belacqua, or Lyra Silvertongue, said about her role that it was “so interesting to investigate intricate, complicated female characters” as they are “usually deemed as dislikable.” She said she found playing Lyra interesting, “because we don’t get characters like her.”

When speaking to the One Show about the final season, James McAvoy teased the war on the horizon. “What can I tell you? It’s war,” McAvoy told The One Show. “At the end of the second season we sort of declare war on the Kingdom of Heaven, so yeah, it gets pretty down and dirty, and there’s gonna be a lot of fisticuffs and a lot of explosions and all that stuff. But at its heart, it’s about a wee girl and a wee boy… and not the adults with the egos.”

According to the plot synopsis, His Dark Materials is set in a multi-world reality, with the action moving from one world to another. The series is based on Philip Pullman’s trilogy of the same name. It begins in an alternative world where all humans’ souls manifest as animal companions called daemons.

The series follows the life of a young girl named Lyra who is an orphan living with the scholars at Jordan College, Oxford, in a world governed by the Magisterium, a religious and political body. Lyra discovers a dangerous secret that involves Lord Asriel and Marisa Coulter and is the subject of a witches’ prophecy that she will change the world. In her search for a missing friend, Lyra also uncovers a series of kidnappings and a link to a mysterious substance called Dust, which leads her on a journey of epic proportions and ultimately to other worlds. The witches’ prophecy also links Lyra’s destiny to Will, a teenager from our world, who is himself being pursued by figures connected to his vanished father.
