The second season of House of the Dragon filming is scheduled to begin in March 2023. The first season, consisting of ten episodes, premiered on August 21. On the first day itself, the show grossed 10 million viewers across the linear channels and HBO Max and biggest in HBO’s history. After getting an overwhelming response from the audience the show has renewed for a second season.
The show was created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik serve as showrunners and executive producers along with George R.R. Martin, Vince Gerardis, Sara Hess, and Ron Schmidt, with Greg Yaitanes as co-executive producer.
House of the Dragon is a prequel to Game of Thrones (2011–2019), and it is the second TV adaptation from the A Song of Ice and Fire franchise, which is based on Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood. In the prequel, the Targaryen dynasty is at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires—real and imagined—crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm.
In season 2, the returning characters are Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Princess / Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Ser Otto Hightower, Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Queen / Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower, Graham McTavish as Ser Harrold Westerling, Matthew Needham as Lord Larys Strong, and Ewan Mitchell as Prince Aemond Targaryen. It was previously rumored that Elizabeth Olsen joined season 2, but the actress claimed she had no idea about it and refused the rumors.
House of the Dragon season 2 begins filming March 2023.
House of the Dragon season 2 release date is TBA. Season 1 is now streaming on HBO Max.
