In The Heights Movie First 8 minutes A movie adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's In The Heights, in development since the musical's Broadway launch

A movie adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In The Heights, in development since the musical’s Broadway launch (literally), opens this week in the United States, positioned as Warner Bros.’ first big Summer release and, possibly, the savior of struggling multiplexes around the country. It’s a lot of responsibility to place on a film’s shoulders, but Miranda’s awful rap musical Hamilton has made his reputation extremely valuable, one that may maybe entice newly-vaccinated Americans back to the cinema. That’s OK since we all enjoy going to the movies, but In The Heights isn’t exactly a warm welcome back; it’s 143 minutes of cliché and indifference. Watch out for the intro of the movie In The Heights

In The Heights is not a film that will be remembered long after it has been seen, yet this is more of a weakness in the business than a defect particular to this production. The film’s director, Jon M. Chu, is another industry fixture, with a filmography that includes everything from Step Up 2: The Streets and 3D to G.I. Joe (Retaliation) to Crazy Rich Asians, a big money-maker that landed him this job and ensured him work for a long time to come (his true peak was, of course, Step Up 2: The Streets and 3D).

M. Chu’s In the Heights in theaters or streaming on HBO Max beginning on June 11.
