Netflix has released the first look of their upcoming series “Inventing Anna” Shonda Rhimes’ first series for the streamer starring Julia Garner, Anna Chlumsky, Jennifer Esposito, Anna Deavere Smith, Jeff Perry, Anders Holm, and Laverne Cox.
“Inventing Anna” is based on the actual story of Anna Sorokin, a German who pretended to be Anna Delvey, a New York millionaire heiress. She was found guilty of theft of services and embezzlement in 2019 after defrauding banks and luxury hotels of more than $200,000 (about 172,000 euros). Is Anna the most notorious thief in New York or merely the new face of the American dream? This is the unanswered question that the Netflix series raises.

Vivian (Anna Chlumsky), a career-threatening journalist researching Anna Delvey’s case, is inspired by Jessica Pressler’s New York Magazine piece “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People.” While Anna is awaiting trial, a strange love/hate connection develops between Anna and the journalist. Shonda Rhimes created “Inventing Anna,” which is produced by her firm, Shondaland. It was co-written by David Frankel (“The Devil Wears Prada”), Nzingha Stewart (“Little Fires Everywhere”), and Tom Verica (“Bridgerton”).
The series will debut on Netflix in 2022.
