James Wan revealed that the canceled DC film “The Trench” was a Secret Black Manta Spin-Off. James added “I’ll let you in on a secret, the canceled Trench spin-off movie was really going to be a secret Black Manta movie,” Wan’s Instagram comment on a post showing off the character’s costume in the upcoming Aquaman 2.

The Trench, as well as Ava DuVernay’s New Gods film, were both canceled in April. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta made his DCEU debut in Aquaman, and he’ll be back in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. “I think this one’s writing is better than the previous. In an interview with Geeks Of ColorDC Comics mainstay and Aquaman co-screenwriter Geoff Johns revealed that Aquaman’s helmeted nemesis, played in the film by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, was almost excised during the scriptwriting phase in order to keep the focus on the story’s central villain, Aquaman’s half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson).

Abdul-Mateen is set to appear in The Matrix Resurrections portraying the role of Morpheus. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled to hit the theaters on December 16, 2022.
