Janelle Monae Joins Daniel–She’s in negotiations to join a star-studded cast for the Rian Johnson-directed mystery, which also features Edward Norton and Dave Bautista. Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer, Michael Shannon, and Toni Collette appeared in the original Knives Out. Knives Out was released in 2019 by Lionsgate and earned an Oscar nomination as well as $311.4 million in box office receipts on a $40 million budget. Johnson, who was nominated for an Oscars in 2020 for his screenplay for Knives Out, told THR that he started working on the script soon after the first film was released.

Netflix scored the rights to two sequels and a pre-made franchise for a whopping $469 million. The only conditions of the contract were that Craig would star in the sequels and that Janelle Monae Joins Daniel each film would have a budget of at least $40 million, which was the budget for the 2019 film.
