Julie Plec, the co-creator of The Vampire Diaries, will adapt E. Lockhart’s YA novel ‘We Were Lies‘ into a series for Amazon. The psychological horror young-adult novel is listed as an ALA Top Ten Best Fiction for Young Adults for 2015.

According to Deadline, Amazon Prime Video has acquired the project for development and also created a mini writers’ room for Plec and Roswell, New Mexico co-creator Carina Adly MacKenzie to adapt the book. Plec will be writing the first episode, and Carina Adly MacKenzie will write the second episode.

The plot of We Were Liars follows, the theme of the consequences of one’s mistakes. It is centered on the wealthy, seemingly perfect Sinclair family, who spend every summer gathering on their private island. However, not every summer is the same—when something happens to Cadence during the summer of her fifteenth year, the four “Liars” (Cadence, Johnny, Gat and Mirren) re-emerge two years later to prompt Cadence to remember the incident.

The series is executive produced by Plec, MacKenzie, Emily Cummins, and E. Lockhart. Produced by Universal Television.

The cast, episode details, and more are to be announced soon.

‘We Were Lies’ release date is TBA on Prime Video.
