Lukas Dhont’s Cannes Grand Prix winner ‘Close’ has been selected as Belgium’s entry for the international feature film category at the 95th Academy Awards. Close stars Eden Dambrine and Gustave De Waele won the Grand Prix trophy at the Cannes Film Festival.

Close is the sequel from Dhont to Girl, which has grabbed the best debut feature in Cannes in 2018. It follows a young transgender woman who wants to dance on pointe with the other girls. The girl won another three Cannes trophies that year — the FIPRESCI film critics honor, the Un Certain Regard best performance trophy for lead Victor Polster, and the Queer Palm for best LGBTQ movie.

Close is written by Lukas Dhont and Angelo Tijssens. it also stars Emilie Dequenne, Kevin Janssens, Igor Van Dessel, Marc Weiss, Léa Drucker, Marc Weiss and Leon Bataille. During the Cannes competition, Mubi acquired the rights for the U.K., Ireland, Latin America, Turkey and India.
