Industry star Marisa Abela on landing a role in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Abela joined the ensemble cast of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling that also includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, Ariana Greenblatt, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Ncuti Gatwa, Emerald Fennell, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Connor Swindells, Ritu Arya, and Jamie Demetriou.
Speaking to Vogue, Marisa Abela said “You can imagine, my first day was totally surreal. The photos you’ve seen barely scratch the surface. I see people online freaking out about certain outfits and I think, just wait until you see the rest.”
The film is directed by Greta Gerwig and the plot details are kept secret. The film is based on the eponymous fashion doll line by Mattel. Gerwig and Noah Baumbach wrote the film. Robbie and Tom Ackerley are producing under their LuckyChap Entertainment production banner, alongside Mattel’s Robbie Brenner and Heyday Films’ David Heyman. LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara and Mattel’s Ynon Kreiz are serving as exec producers.
Marisa Abela is known for her roles in the BBC Two and HBO series Industry and the Sky One series COBRA. Abela will next appear in She Is Love and Freeguard.
The film is scheduled to be released on July 21, 2023.
