Following the success of Beginners and 20th Century Women (NYFF54), writer-director Mike Mills returns with another loving, intelligent, and delightfully off-kilter portrayal of American family life. Johnny, a kindhearted radio journalist deep into a project in which he interviews youngsters around the United States about our world’s uncertain future, is played by a soulful Joaquin Phoenix. His sister, Viv (a brilliantly perceptive Gaby Hoffmann), begs him to look after her 8-year-old son, Jesse (Woody Norman, in one of the year’s most moving breakout child performances), while she attends to the boy’s father, who is suffering from mental illness. After their agreement, Johnny finds himself bonding with his nephew in unexpected ways, eventually bringing Jesse on a journey from Los Angeles to New York to New Orleans. C’mon C’mon is a delicate yet perfectly produced drama about coming to terms with personal tragedy and historical legacy, anchored by three outstanding performers. This is an A24 release.
