M.O.D.O.K. has surprised casual and devoted Marvel fans alike with its combination of serious issues and absurdist comedy since taking over Hulu. With Patton Oswalt as the titular M.O.D.O.K., the series has an amazing roster of characters, some of whom delve into the deepest reaches of Marvel mythology. Iron Man (Jon Hamm), Wonder Man (Nathan Fillion), and unique characters for M.O.D.O.K.’s family such as his wife Jodie (Aimee Garcia), son Lou (Ben Schwartz), and daughter Melissa round out Oswalt’s portrayal of the larger-than-life villain (Melissa Fumero).

Jordan Blum, best known for his work on American Dad! as a producer and writer, breathes new life into M.O.D.O.K.‘s stop motion animation with writings that, despite the subject matter, never sound preachy. Being able to access the Marvel library was a dream come true for Blum, but as the creator of the series, he couldn’t be sidetracked from his vision. And, as Blum explains, there weren’t many creative constraints behind the scenes owing to Hulu. It’s hardly unexpected, given that this is one of the few Marvel shows to survive outside of the MCU.

M.O.D.O.K. is perfect for people looking for a “break from the linked Marvel universe” and something a little different. The driving force behind this latest Marvel series provides us a glimpse into his creative process through all of the allusions and humor, be it strange plot decisions, carefully produced animation, or some of his own future ideas.
