The heavyweights will star in “May December,” which tells the story of a Hollywood actress (Portman) who travels to Maine’s scenic coast to research the real-life woman (Moore) she’ll play in a film. Two decades before, the woman in question was the center of a tabloid controversy for marrying a guy 23 years her junior. The family dynamic begins to collapse under Portman’s outsider lens as Moore’s character and her husband prepare to send their twin daughters off to college.
Samy Burch is penning the script, which is based on a tale she co-wrote with Alex Mechanik. At this year’s Virtual Cannes Market, the project will debut worldwide sales via Rocket Science. Domestic sales are handled by UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance.
Gloria Sanchez Productions’ Jessica Elbaum and Will Ferrell (“Hustlers,” “Booksmart,” “Barb and Star”) Killer Films’ Christine Vachon (“Shirley”) and Pam Koffler (“Go to Vista Del Mar”) will produce alongside Portman and SophieMas under their MountainA brand with Portman and Sophie Mas. Filming is expected to begin in 2022.
“What drew me to Samy Burch’s great script was the way it handled potentially incendiary subject matter with a kind of observant patience that allowed the story’s characters to be developed with extraordinary subtlety,” Haynes said.
Haynes reunites with his “Far From Heaven” co-star Moore for the sixth time on this project, and his Apple Studios original documentary “The Velvet Underground” is an official selection at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. CAA and Cinetic Media are his agents.
Portman is a three-time Academy Award nominee who won the best actress in 2011 for her performance in “Black Swan.” She just wrapped on Marvel’s “Thor: Love and Thunder,” directed by Taika Waititi. CAA and Agence Adequat represent her.
