Dwayne Johnson and Amazon Studios, the sleigh bells are ringing. Dwayne Johnson and his company, Seven Bucks Productions, have created Red One, a one-of-a-kind Christmas-themed feature film that appears to offer branding and marketing potential for both Amazon’s streaming and e-commerce platforms. Chris Morgan, the Fast and Furious author who collaborated with Johnson on four Fast films as well as the Johnson-led Hobbs & Shaw spinoff in 2019, will pen the script. It’s also based on an original narrative by Hiram Garcia, the president of the production at Seven Bucks.
According to Amazon’s announcement on Monday, Red One is billed as “a globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy, creating a whole new universe to explore inside the Christmas genre.”
Despite the fact that the statement made no mention of Big Red, Santa Claus, or the Christmas season, numerous sources suggest the initiative is Santa-centric. Johnson will act in and produce the film alongside Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks. Morgan will also serve as a producer. There is no connected director.
However, Amazon and Seven Bucks see this as possibly more than a movie. The statement noted, “This innovative notion offers a property that could cover not simply a tentpole film, but also stretch across numerous sectors and enterprises.” The firms may include gift-giving businesses that thrive over the Christmas season, according to sources (and that, of course, includes Amazon and Amazon Prime).
The film is scheduled to begin production in 2022, with a Christmas release in 2023.
“We know Red One will continue the history of Seven Bucks Productions in delivering distinctive and exciting entertainment for the entire family,” said Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke. “Hiram’s concept and the universe he’s created are completely unique, and we’re thrilled to be working with Seven Bucks Productions and Chris Morgan to help bring it to life. Red One is only the beginning of what we know will be a fruitful collaboration.”
“Hold my Mana, because this is exciting,” Johnson said. Our Seven Bucks is quite optimistic about our collaboration with Amazon Studios, which is based on some creativity, foresight, and a lot of good energy and enthusiasm. Jen Salke and her colleagues have wowed me with their vision and desire to build a vast, entertaining, and distinctive Red One Christmas environment for families all around the world.”
