Robert Downey Jr. will star in ‘The Sympathizer,’ a Seix Barral-produced television adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel, which is known in Spain as ‘The Sympathizer.’ The Novel, which was published by Grove Press in 2015, is about a half-French, half-Vietnamese man who worked as a spy for Communist troops during the Vietnam War. This unnamed protagonist is followed throughout the narrative as he witnesses the final days of the historic conflict, lives in exile in Los Angeles, and travels around Southeast Asia.

Although Downey Jr. will be the most well-known name and the primary claim of a production with a cast made up of Vietnamese translators, he will not play the protagonist. On the other hand, a project in which he might play many characters and make more than a million dollars every episode.

Park Chan-wook will helm all episodes of at least the first season of the upcoming series, which is being produced with the intention of having at least two seasons, as he stated last spring. In turn, Chan-wook will serve as co-showrunner alongside Don McKellar in a film produced by A24 and Rhombus Media in collaboration with Cinetic Media and Moho Film and distributed by HBO globally. After the success of ‘The Girl with the Drum,’ a superb rendition of John le Carré’s novel starring Florence Pugh, Alexander Skarsgrd, and Michael Shannon in 2018, this will be his second television excursion into Chan-wook.

The South Korean filmmaker is awaiting the release of his latest film, a sordid melodrama starring Park Hae-il (‘The Host’ ) and Tang Wei (‘Long Journey Into Night’ ), which is said to connect with the “darker” sensibilities of the person in charge of the revenge trilogy – ‘Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance’, ‘Oldboy’, and ‘Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
