Sam Raimi-Produced Evil Dead Rise Begins Filming in New Zealand

Director Lee Cronin announced on Twitter that filming on New Line Cinema’s upcoming fifth edition of the Evil Dead franchise, Evil Dead Rise, has commenced in New Zealand. The start of filming comes nearly two weeks after it was reported that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell’s movie, which has been in development since last year, had been picked up by New Line Cinema. Evil Dead Rise will be released on HBO Max and will star Australian actresses Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings) and Lily Sullivan (Picnic at Hanging Rock) as the new female leads of the long-running horror franchise.

Evil Dead Rise is rumored to portray a modern-day urban horror story, bringing the franchise out of the woods for the first time and into the city. Lee Cronin, the director of The Hole In The Ground, was chosen by franchise creators Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Robert Tapert to write and direct the picture. Raimi, Campbell, Tapert, Romel Adam, John Keville, and Macdara Kelleher serve as executive producers.

Cronin previously stated in a statement, “The Evil Dead movies filled my head with dread and awe when I first watched them at nine years old.” “I am both ecstatic and humbled to be recreating the most famous of evil powers for fans and a new generation.”
