In April, Mendes spoke to Extra about how close he and Cabello have privately remained following their November breakup. (The two dated for over two years before splitting and were longtime friends before their romantic relationship.) “Camila and I have always been writers for as long as we’ve known each other, so we understand what that means,” he said of their writing breakup songs about each other. “And we respect what that means. And there’ll always be transparency between us.”
To E!, he added, “Camila heard this song [‘When You’re Gone’] months ago, so we have a really honest relationship. I would never really put a song out about her before she would hear it.”
