Sofia Vergara will portray the female leader of a big Colombian drug organization in Griselda, a new Netflix series. Vergara is a well-known actress in Hollywood, best known for playing Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on ABC’s famous sitcom Modern Family for 11 seasons. She has appeared in live-action and animated films such as New Year’s Eve, The Smurfs, and The Emoji Movie, and she is presently a judge on America’s Got Talent.
According to Variety, Sofia’s next project will be a Netflix series on entrepreneur Griselda Blanco, in which Vergara will star and executive produce. From the 1980s through the early 2000s, Vergara will play Blanco, a Colombian drug trafficker who was instrumental in developing the Miami cocaine trade. Through their production business Latin World Entertainment, Vergara has been creating the series alongside Luis Balaguer for the past eight years.
Griselda Blanco was a larger-than-life character whose ruthless but ingenious tactics allowed her to rule a billion dollar empire years before many of the most notorious male kingpins we know so much about. We are thrilled to have found the perfect partners in Eric [Newman], Andrés [Baiz] and Netflix to help us bring this story of her life to the screen.
“Griselda Blanco has long been a passion project for Sofia and we are grateful that she and her partners at LatinWe have chosen us to help her tell that story,” Newman said. “Sofia is a brilliant talent and her passion combined with a fantastic story from Doug and Ingrid, and the amazing Andrés Baiz at the directing helm, means we have a very exciting series to share with audiences.”
Ingrid Escajeda has been tapped as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Baiz will direct every episode. Despite suspicions linking the show to Narcos, another drama involving drug gangs, the plot is unconnected. Along with Vergara and Balaguer, Baiz, Newman, Doug Miro, and Carlo Bernard, who all collaborated on Narcos, will executive produce Griselda.
