Marvel fans were surprised to see a figure that looked very similar to Abomination battling it out in a cage match in the latest trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which was published last week. Aside from the addition of gills to match his comic book look, it was clearly Tim Roth’s portrayal of the villain from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, but given the regularity of odd creatures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was always the potential that the creature might be someone else. That is no longer the case.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has acknowledged that the figure in the video is Abomination, in an unexpected show of candour. Furthermore, fans speculated that his opponent in the ring will be yet another significant MCU figure, which Feige confirmed as well. According to Rotten Tomatoes:
“Yes, we just recently released the final trailer for Shang-Chi,” said Feige. “Some fans said, ‘This looks like a character they hadn’t seen in many years named The Abomination, fighting a character that looks like Wong. And I can say that the reason it looks like that is because that is Abomination fighting Wong.”
Given that Shang-Chi is the official start of Marvel Phase 4, we’ve already seen a number of MCU properties weave their way through the video. The cage fight takes place in Madripoor, which was a pivotal location in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Abomination is there ahead of his upcoming appearance in the She-Hulk series, and now we have confirmation that Wong is cage-fighting recreationally before the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. White Vision floating about in the backdrop is the only thing lacking, and we wouldn’t rule it out just yet.
