The VOD release of The Addams Family 2 will coincide with the film’s theatrical release on October 1, 2021. This is a departure from the approach used by certain companies with their family flicks. The Mitchells vs. The Machines and The Boss Baby: Family Business, both animated films, were released on Netflix and Peacock, with the latter receiving a simultaneous theatrical release. Luca from Pixar moved straight to Disney+, while Raya and the Last Dragon from Disney went to Disney+ Premier Access.

Unfortunately, MGM and Annapurna Pictures do not have their own streaming service, making it difficult to distribute the film digitally. Though they could have sold the film to Netflix or Amazon (who is in the process of buying MGM), they prefer to recuperate as much money as possible, and a VOD release is the best way to do it, especially if they want to keep it in theatres. At the same time, this might result in less income because families will be able to pay a single fee for all of them to see it at home, resulting in fewer ticket sales.
