Gunn previously stated in 2018 that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be published in 2020. Those plans, however, crumbled to dust and vanished like a blip. The first setbacks occurred after Gunn was shot by Disney for a brief period of time — only long enough for Warner Bros. to hire him to write and direct The Suicide Squad. The global COVID-19 pandemic, of course, accelerated the film’s release.
Starting production this year puts the film on target for its 2023 release date, and it also bodes well for the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which will be filmed during the production of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and will premiere on Disney+ in 2022.As Guardians star Dave Bautista told EW in December, all of the delays seem to have affected the expected storyline: “I think it is safe to assume that production will begin late next year,” Bautista says. “Before anything went crazy, I saw a script when we were all on time and James Gunn was attached.” I assume this is because [Marvel’s] entire schedule has shifted [due to the paternity leave].
