The first official song from Leos Carax’s next musical drama “Annette,” starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, has been released by Milan Records. The film is a sung-through musical featuring songs written by the Sparks brothers, and it will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in July. Sparks, Driver, Cotillard, and co-star Simon Helberg all provide vocals to the lead track “So May We Begin.” Sparks and Leos Carax co-wrote the lyrics for the final soundtrack compilation, which was produced by Sparks and performed by Sparks and the cast of “Annette.”
In a statement, Sparks said, “At first, we imagined ‘Annette’ as another Sparks record.” “However, this time it would be a narrative plot with three major characters, a small enough ensemble to allow us to take the ‘opera’ on the road with us. The music, script, and record were all prepared and ready to go, which is when the plot diverges dramatically.”
“I found Sparks when I was around 14 – I grabbed a copy of ‘Propaganda’ from an underground shop near La Défense because I loved the cover,” Carax recalled in a statement following the release of the first track. I saw them perform live at the Olympia in Paris not long after that. Since then, ‘Propaganda’ and their subsequent album, ‘Indiscreet,’ have been a part of my existence. Their songs are among the happiest I’ve ever heard (but they’re also sad at times). Sparks’ song reminds me of my childhood house, but without the ghosts. Without them, I don’t think I would have ever done what I’d wanted to accomplish since I first started working in film: making a musical film.’”
Annette will be released in cinemas on Friday, August 6 in the United States, and on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, August 20.
