The Woman King: First Look at Viola Davis

Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King new images for Viola Davis, John Boyega, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, and Sheila Atim has been revealed. The Woman King follows Nanisca, the general of the Dahomey Amazons, and Nawi, an ambitious recruit in the Kingdom of Dahomey. The film will depict how the pair “fought enemies who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they have lived for.” check out the images below.

The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood from a screenplay co-written with Dana Stevens. Speaking to Vanityfair, Gina opened up where she got the idea of the warrior woman often appears in your work going back to Love & Basketball. she told “I grew up an athlete. The women around me were athletes. There was a normalcy to how I thought about myself. You fight. Aggression is good. Leave it all out on the floor. And as I got older, it surprised me how few women had the advantage of growing up like that. That innate warrior that I believe we all have is dormant in so many women because it wasn’t encouraged or valued.”

The film stars Viola Davis as Nanisca, Thuso Mbedu as Nawi, Lashana Lynch, John Boyega as King Ghezo, Adrienne Warren as Ode, Sheila Atim as Amenza, Jayme Lawson, Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Santo Ferreira, Masali Baduza as Fumbe, Angélique Kidjo, Jimmy Odukoya, Thando Dlomo, and Jordan Bolger.

The Woman King will hit theaters on September 16, 2022.
