TOM WELLING IS BACK AS SUPERMAN FOR A SMALLVILLE ANIMATED SERIES

Smallville, The CW’s superhero series that focused on a young Clark Kent before he fully assumed the Superman mantle, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The successful show ran for ten seasons and inspired a comic book continuation of its story, but now actor Tom Welling, who played Clark, has revealed that he and former co-star Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor, have collaborated to create a Smallville animated sequel series.

This is far from a guarantee that an animated Smallville show will ever be made, but unless their scripts are completely terrible, I can’t think of any reason why it couldn’t. Smallville is owned by Warner Bros. Entertainment, and while the live-action series eventually aired on The CW, which is owned by CBS, it was actually produced by Warner Bros. TV, so there shouldn’t be any complicated rights issues when it comes to making an animated continuation. Unless I’m mistaken, this animated sequel could potentially find a home on Warner’s streaming service, HBO Max, which is always looking for new content and isn’t afraid to experiment.
