Trevante Rhodes set to star as Mike Tyson

Hulu has ordered Mike Tyson biopic series starring Trevante Rhodes by ‘I, Tonya’ & ‘Pam & Tommy’ director Craig Gillespie & screenwriter Steven Rogers. Margot Robbie will also serve as an executive producer.

Iron Mike has been cast by Hulu. Trevante Rhodes, who starred in Moonlight, has been cast as Mike Tyson in the Netflix short series Iron Mike. The eight-episode drama, from the creators of I, Tonya, will chronicle the crazy, tragic, and contentious life and career of what Hulu describes as “one of the most divisive individuals in sports culture.” Though sources claim Hulu execs informed Tyson and his team on the series a few months ago, he is not involved in any way with it.

While Tyson is regarded as one of the all-time great heavyweight fighters, he was convicted of rape and served three years of a six-year sentence. After his release, Tyson attempted a return in boxing but was defeated in a rematch against Evander Holyfield in 1997, in which he was notoriously disqualified for chewing off a piece of his opponent’s ear. He retired in 2006 but returned to the ring last year to fight Roy Jones Jr.

Following his part in Hulu’s film The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Rhodes’ casting takes him back to the streaming service. His film credits include the Oscar-winning Moonlight and Netflix’s Birdbox, in which he played adult Chiron. Jackoway Austen is his agent.

Tyson attacked the program as a “tone-deaf cultural theft” of his life narrative after it was picked up straight to series in February. Tyson, on the other hand, is set to executive produce a written series based on his life, with Jamie Foxx, set to feature. A network has not yet been established for that project.
