HBO Max is expanding its animated series inspired by Game of Thrones. While the streamer was originally rumored to be working on a single animation project in January, it is currently working on at least two other possible series.
The Golden Empire of Yi Ti (or just Yi Ti), a region on the continent of Essos at the south-eastern borders of the known world, is the setting for one of the three projects. The society is based on Imperial China and is one of the oldest and most evolved in author George R.R. Martin’s vast fantasy world (much the same way Westeros, which was the primary setting for GoT, was inspired by Medieval Europe).
Though a character in HBO’s upcoming prequel series, House of the Dragon, Lord Corlys Velaryon the “Sea Snake,” famously sailed to Yi Ti, Yi Ti had just a passing mention in Game of Thrones.
Another Game of Thrones spin-off update is that one live-action prequel project has been scrapped. Flea Bottom, a project centered on life in the famed King’s Landing slum that had been reported as in development, has been canceled. According to sources, it was always the most fledgling of the publicized concepts, and HBO never confirmed it.
HBO Max has little to say about the two new animated projects. The streamer has just greenlit a Batman animated series from creators J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, indicating that it is expanding its adult animation slate in general.
