Vanessa Kirby is set to cast alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Ridley Scott’s Kitbag, Previously Jodie Comer in the talks to play the role. Now Vanessa Kirby replaced Jodie Comer. The historical drama for Apple production will start this fall. The film is an original and personal look at Napoleon Bonaparte’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to the emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. David Scarpa will be writing the script.
In an interview with Collider, The producer Scott reportedly referred to the upcoming film as a “monster.” read:
“No actor could ever embody Napoleon like Joaquin,” said Scott when the project first landed at Apple Studios. “He created one of movie history’s most complex Emperors in Gladiator, and we’ll create another with his Napoleon. It’s a brilliant script written by David Scarpa, and today there’s no better partner than Apple to bring a story like this to a global audience.”
Kirby received her first Oscar nomination for her turn as Martha this year, a Boston woman struggling to endure the loss of a child, in Pieces of a Woman, starring in the Kornél Mundruczó Netflix film alongside Shia LaBeouf and Ellen Burstyn. The BAFTA Award-winner who has also notched nominations at the Emmys, Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and SAG Awards is otherwise best known for her portrayal of Princess Margaret in the first and second seasons of Netflix’s The Crown.
