Gotham Knightsare being developed by Warner Bros. Games Montréal, however, it isn’t the only project they are working on. The studio is working on a third-person open-world action game, according to a recent job posting. Serial leakerJames Sigfield has suggested that this project would most likely be a Superman game, according to ResetEra, and WB Games Montréal’s Creative Director has been dropping a few subtle references to the superhero as well.
Thanks to a job posting that emerged a few months after the launch of Gotham Knights, the team’s AAA new IP has been known for quite some time. A 3C Game Designer will develop playable characters for a third-person open-world action game, according to a recent job posting. While this might suit the Gotham Knights idea, many believe it is more likely to be the new AAA game. Before the game was revealed, Sigfield disclosed the idea of Gotham Knights, as well as Rocksteady’s focus on Suicide Squad. This strengthens his claims that the upcoming game will be a Superman game.
Since then, Sigfield has been debating the benefits of a Superman game with fellow Twitter users, and WB Games Montréal’s Creative Director Patrick Redding has liked numerous of his Tweets. While it’s possible that this is all a coincidence, especially since Superman isn’t exactly a fresh IP, a Superman game has been long delayed, and the studio has a history with the property. Superman would be a “new IP” for the developer in terms of the games universe, just as the Batman Arkham series of games was a “new IP” despite Batman’s long history.
Superman’s most recent game, Superman Returns, was released in 2006 and was partly based on the film of the same name. While the hero has appeared in a number of games since then, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, many people believe 15 years is far too long. According to rumors, this isn’t because of a lack of effort; Warner Bros. has supposedly canceled two Superman games since 2013. WB Games Montréal was said to be working on one of them. There were also reports that Rocksteady was working on a Superman game. It remains to be seen if these speculations ever gain traction.
