Warner Bros. has canceled DC’s Batgirl, which was scheduled to release in 2022 on HBO Max. According to Warner Bros., The production budget for the film is around $80 million, but due to COVID-19 protocols, it reaches $90 million. The filming has been completed. The sudden axed announcement from Warner Bros. was the newly installed Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav prioritizing cost-cutting measures and refocusing Warners on creating theatrical films rather than projects for streaming, as had been a priority for former WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar.

The spokesman from Warner Bros. has commented in a statement “The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max, Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance.”

Will Batgirl Release In the Future?

Warner Bros. will announce Batgirl will go for a theatrical release in the future. The filming was completed so they cannot waste the efforts the production crew made.

On August 2, 2022. Warner Bros. announced they have pulled Batgirl from release. Warner Bros Discovery explained the cancellation was due to “committed to making DC titles big theatrical event films, and ‘Batgirl’ isn’t that.”

Batgirl stars Leslie Grace will play the role of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl and Michael Keaton plays Bruce Wayne/Batman, Brendan Fraser as Ted Carson/Firefly, Ivory Aquino as Alysia Yeoh, Jacob Scipio as Anthony Bressi, Rebecca Front, and Corey Johnson. The film is directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.

According to Insiders, The big-budget films made directly for streaming no longer make financial sense under the company’s new strategy. In June, Zaslav tapped MGM’s Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy to run Warners, replacing Toby Emmerich.

Warner Bros. Discovery leadership had been looking to find $3 billion in cost savings after the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery closed in April. Major cuts along the way for the conglomerate have included streaming service CNN+, which cost $300 million before the plug was pulled a month after launch, and J.J. Abrams’ pricey HBO original Demimonde, which aimed to have a $200 million-plus budget.
