Tom Holland‘s Fred Astaire biopic will be directed by Paul King (Paddington).
Sony Pictures is producing the film, which stars Tom Holland as the legendary actor and dancing star Fred Astaire. The film is currently untitled.
The plot details have not yet been revealed by Sony. According to Deadline, the film centers around Astaire’s relationship with his sister, Adele Astaire. For more than 20 years, the two were inseparable, moving from a modest Midwestern vaudeville act in the early 20th century to Broadway and London’s West End in the 1920s. Adele Astaire was the face of the act at first, but Fred Astaire’s superb stage talents gradually surpassed hers. The couple split up in 1932 when the sister married, which was a setback for Fred, but it also catapulted him into the world of Hollywood dance musicals and, eventually, movie stardom.
Lee Hall, who wrote Billy Elliot, is rewriting Noah Pink’s script for the long-running project. From 2008 to 2010, Holland played the ballet-loving child in the West End musical Billy Elliot The Musical, launching his career. Hall and Holland are reuniting for the project.
The film is produced by Amy Pascal, Rachael O’Conner, Ben Holden, and Josh Hyams.
Paul King is best known for directing the films Paddington and Paddington 2. King’s upcoming film is based on the origins of Willy Wonka.
Holland is well-known for playing Spider-Man/Peter Parker in six MCU films. He was most recently seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed $1.9 billion worldwide.
