Nintendo has officially announced that the sequel to ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘ is in the works, with the release date now revealed.

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2‘ will hit theaters on April 3, 2026, by Universal Pictures.
During a Mario Day video, celebrated annually on March 10, Nintendo game director Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri announced the news.
On X, Nintendo of America stated, “This is Miyamoto. We are now creating a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. This film is planned for release in theaters on April 3rd, 2026, in the US and many other markets, and throughout the month of April in other territories.”
“We’ll let you know the details once we’re ready to share more. This time, too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further, and it’ll have a bright and fun story. We hope you’ll look forward to it!
The announcements are as follows: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is slated for release on May 23, 2024, followed by Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD on June 27, 2024. The sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie is scheduled for April 3, 2026. Additionally, three new Mario games, Dr. Mario, Mario Golf, and Mario Tennis, will be added to NSO on March 12.
Co-directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are set to return for the sequel. Meledandri stated on Sunday that they, along with their team of animators, are already “busy at work storyboarding scenes and developing set designs for new environments.”
Recently, Chris Pratt, who voices Mario in the film, has revealed that ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2’ is coming soon.
According to Universal Pictures, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘ is described as a “new franchise,” indicating the possibility of a sequel.
In an interview with Variety, Jack Black says he wants ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2’ to be a musical. Black said, “I think it [‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2’] should be a full musical [‘titled ‘Bowser’s Revenge.’], like what Todd Phillips is supposedly doing with ‘Joker 2’.”
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now available on digital platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Apple TV+, and Experience 4K on Google Play Movies & TV.
